Takashi Inoguchi Endowed Track on Quality of Life and Well-being in East Asia

Named for an ISQOLS leader and pioneer in the advancement of  Quality of Life and Well-Being in East Asia,the "Takashi Inoguchi Endowed Track" permanently endows a track on "Quality of Life and Well-Being in East Asia," to be held as part of each ISQOLS international conference program. This track will include as least two sessions consisting of three or more participants whose research activities overlap with the purpose of this endowment.

Sessions organized by each Conference Program Committee will represent topical areas related to  the theme "Quality of Life and Well-Being in East Asia." Such topics include, but are not limited to:  East Asian quality of life, well-being, happiness, interpersonal trust, institutional trust (such as  trust in medical hospitals, the  mass media,  digital communications (SNS), and trust in digital software).  The endowment also will support papers that focus on the  harmony within sovereign states in their multilateral relationships with other nations. .

Only the income earned from this Fund will be used to support the endowed track.


Short CV of Takashi Inoguchi

Takashi Inoguchi is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tokyo and, currently, is an  Eminent Scholar and Professor of Political Science at J. F. Oberlin University, Tokyo (2017 to present). He received his doctorate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974, and initially served as assistant professor of Sophia University, Tokyo (1974-1977).  He also has served as faculty member of the University of Tokyo (1977-2005) and, then. as Senior Vice Rector of the United Nations University, Tokyo (Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations), (1995-1997). He also served the faculty member of Chuo University (2005-2009) and, most recently, as President and Chairman of the Board, University of Niigata Prefecture (2009-2017).

Professor Inoguchi also has  served as a member of the Peace and Security Committee of the United States Social Science Research Council (1992-1996), as a member of the International Committee of Peace Research, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, of which the chair and vice chair were Henry Kissinger and Mario Soares respectively (2003-2006), as a member of the Conference on How to Govern Afghanistan, chaired by Kofi Annan (2002), and as a Global Council member of the Asia Society (2013-present).

In Japan, he served as a member of the National Life Council of the Japanese Government (1984-1986), as a member of the Legislative Council of the Japanese Government (1999-2009), and as a member of the Japan Council of Science (2003-2009). Also, he served as a member of the Japan-US Educational Commission (2005-2009) and as a member of the Japan-US Commission of Cultural Exchange (2003-2006), as a council member of the Suntory Foundation (2009-present), and as a council member of the Japan Economic Foundation (2012 to present).

As an academic editor, he has been founding editor of the following: Japanese Journal of Political Science(Cambridge University Press, 2000-present), International Relations of the Asia-Pacific (Oxford University Press, 2000-2005), Asian Journal of Comparative Politics (SAGE Publications, 2016-present), Asian Journal for Public Opinion Research (open access journal, 2013-present). As an academic editor of book series, he has been founding editor of the following: one of the co-editors along with G. John Ikenberry, "Asia Today" Palgrave Macmillan (2009-present), the Editor of "Trust: Interdisciplinary Perspectives",  Springer (2016-present).

He has published some 150 books and numerous articles. Among some 40 books published in English, latest among which are American Democracy Promotion (Oxford University Press, 2000), The Political Economy of Japan, Vol.2 (Stanford University Press, 1988), The Changing Nature of Democracy, United Nations University Press, 1998), Political Cultures in Asia and Europe, Routledge, 2006, Citizens and the State: Attitudes in Western Europe and East and Southeast Asia, Routledge, 2008, Globalization, Public Opinion and the State, Routledge, 2008.

The titles of the last three books which have analyzed 52,215 individual sheets assembled from 29 Asian respondents plus those from the United States, the Russian Federation and Australia with about 1,000-3,000 sample size in each, adapting national random sampling and face to faced interviews under the AsiaBarometer Survey Project of which he has been director are:
